An opportunity to see and photograph Least Bitterns at Hallcat brought me to Plum Island on a somewhat hot and windy day in mid July. I was fortunate to meet Tom Wetmore on the dike on west side of the North Pool who easily pointed out one perched between two reeds about 3 feet off the ground within just a few minutes. Great views and expert tutorage, what could be better!

In addition to the Bitterns, also present were Greater Yellowleg, Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrow, Willet, Short-billed Dowitchers (females already returning from the nesting grounds), Great Yellowlegs, Least Sandpipers, Snowy Egrets and Great Egrets.
